I get asked about microneedling a lot — and for good reason. It’s one of the best things you can do at home to support your existing hair, whether you’ve had a transplant or you’re trying to hold onto what you’ve got.
Here’s the thing: microneedling won’t save hair that’s already gone. That’s what hair transplants are for. What it does is help restore the thickness and growth rate of your existing hairs. Think of it as maintenance for the hair you still have.
Derma Roller vs. Derma Pen
Derma rollers are straightforward — fast coverage, broad stimulation. I personally use a 1.2mm roller for the balance of effectiveness and ease of use. Consistency matters more than perfection here.
Derma pens give you pinpoint accuracy with less collateral damage. Most derma-pen protocols use depths between 0.5–0.85mm for precision targeting. Less trauma with controlled application delivers great results if you’re willing to take the time.
How to Do It Right
Prep: Clean your scalp thoroughly. Remove product buildup. Sterilize your tool — this is non-negotiable.
Roller technique: Moderate pressure, multi-directional rolling — horizontal, vertical, diagonal. Think lawn-mowing patterns for even coverage.
Pen technique: Stretch the skin slightly with your free hand. Keep consistent movement without pressing too hard. The motor does the work.
After: Redness is normal — it means the healing process is starting. Don’t wipe or aggravate the area. If you’re feeling anything beyond mild discomfort, you’re overdoing it.
Post-Treatment Protocol
H2Ocean spray — apply liberally right after treatment. The lysozyme calms inflammation, eases redness, and accelerates healing. Let it absorb, don’t wipe.
LaserCap session — follow up with your LaserCap to stimulate dormant follicles back into active growth phases. The combination of microneedling + laser therapy is where the real compounding happens.
Wait 24 hours before using harsh chemicals, heavy products, or heat styling. Let your scalp recover.
Think of this ongoing care like compounding interest for your hair — regular H2Ocean and LaserCap use amplifies your results over time.
How Often?
- Derma pen users: Every 4–6 weeks (deeper engagement needs more recovery)
- Derma roller users: Weekly sessions (gentler action, faster recovery)
Expect to see initial improvements within 3–6 months. Look for reduced shedding, fuller texture, and new growth coming in. This is a long-term commitment, not a quick fix.
If results aren’t where you want them, adjust your needle depth, frequency, or aftercare. Everyone responds differently.
Before and After Transplant
Pre-transplant: Microneedling prepares your scalp by boosting circulation and optimizing follicle readiness. Great for getting the most out of your procedure.
Post-transplant: Wait 6–12 months for new grafts to establish before reintroducing microneedling. Once you’re cleared, it acts as a booster — encouraging transplanted hair into growth phases while revitalizing the native hair around it.
The key is coordinating all of these tools together. Microneedling alone is good. Microneedling as part of a full strategy — that’s where the results really show.
